GHANA : Stonebwoy talks dancehall ….says Ambolley is right

    Stonebwoy

Dancehall icon Stonebwoy has added his voice to calls for uniqueness in Ghanaian Dancehall and Reggae music.

According to him, though what Ghanaian Dancehall musicians are doing now is pure Jamaican Dancehall, it will make sense to add a little bit of Ghanaian flavour to make it unique.

He was commenting on a recent statement from ace saxophonist, composer and rapper Gyedy Blay Ambolley that Ghanaian Dancehall artistes should do well to get a unique identity that would differentiate them from their Jamaican counterparts.

“We do Jamaican Dancehall and Reggae in Ghana a lot, so if we are doing Dancehall and Reggae, I don’t know how else you want it to sound differently from the regular Dancehall and Reggae music we have. But I believe that picking a point from what Ambolley said, inculcating our cultural stuff from Ghana into our Reggae and Dancehall music is an intelligent argument because you can hear me fuse Twi or Ewe in most of the songs that I do; that is trying to inculcate the Ghanaian element into them,” Stonebwoy, currently in Italy, told NEWS-ONE in a telephone interview.

He also stated that Ambolley, a veteran Ghanaian musician is apt in expressing his opinion on music.

“He may also have a reason for saying that. He cannot come out and say anything anyhow because I think he is an elderly person and an elderly musician in Ghana who also can add his opinion when certain things are going on about music.

“Leaving the highlife and hiplife genres, where he belongs, to make a comment about Reggae and Dancehall, I believe that it may not be all perfect or all true. He may have his reasons,” Stonebwoy added.

His statement conforms with what Ambolley called for: “The musicians, who are in that line of music, take more of their beats that come from Jamaica and add their voices to them. I think we need to have an identity. If our brothers from Jamaica who have created that form of music come down here and we are doing the same thing like them, it doesn’t really sit down with me. We need to add some part of our cultural aspect to the style that we’re using in the Reggae and Dancehall music.”

Stonebwoy got nominated in five categories – Dancehall Artiste of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Dancehall Song of the Year, Best Collaboration of the Year and Best Performer of the Year – for the 2014 BASS Awards.

He commended the organizers of the awards for focusing on awarding and rewarding artistes in the Reggae and Dancehall genres.

“For the primary idea of awarding Reggae and Dancehall artiste across Africa and Ghana, it is good because at the end of the day, it focuses on those particular genres to reward or award artistes, who contribute to Reggae and Dancehall in Ghana,” he said.

Mark Okraku Mantey predicts doom for Shatta Wale’s songs

Ghanaian music producer and Chief Executive Officer of Slip Music, Mark Okraku Mantey has advised Ghanaian musicians to produce songs which will last for long.

Speaking at a focus group discussion for hiplife artiste Edem’s album, “Books” “N” “Ryhmes”, he said Ghanaian musicians should concentrate on sustaining their career than making hit songs which will fade away in no time.

“I am not somebody who believes in music that somebody does for a few months and he gets a hit. Hit making is not difficult, find out. You sustain your career and make money from it after 20 years that is an artiste”, he said.

He further stated that the reigning artiste of the year, Shatta Wale’s music cannot stand the test of time because he produces songs which last for few months.

“….Not people who get hits for 6 months, like Shatta. His music, mark it on the wall, cannot last the test of time.”

Speaking on why Nigerian music is gradually gaining roots in Ghana, the controversial music producer said, “Nigerians are doing well in Ghana because they have melodies everybody can always sing along.

“It was actually our trademark when they took it from us. It’s good to do hardcore music but when you looking for the money or what people will appreciate, concentrate on what the ladies can sing” Edem hosted a group of music gurus on Saturday, May 10 at Travern in Osu, Accra to listen and judge his tracks on his upcoming album, “Books” “N” “Ryhmes”.

The industry players who were present at the venue to listen to the 23 tracks included Mark Okreku Mantey, Lawyer Michael Quaye, Ama K. Abebrese, Francis Doku, Magnom, Lil Shaker, Daddy Bosco, radio presenters, media men and fans of Edem.

    Zimbabwe: Zahara Thrills for Charity

The “Loliwe” hitmaker was on point and she delighted her fans including Environment, Water and Climate Minister

Saviour Kasukuwere, who was among the guests at the fund-raising show meant for the Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims.

Zahara, who has performed in Harare on a number of occasions, must have felt like she was performing before a home

crowd as the crowd sang along to all her classic hits including two songs by the late great Brenda Fassie.

Backed by two vocalists with whom she often referred to as beautiful, Zahara would not indulge the crowd, who

wanted her to comment on the recently held elections in her homeland.

“All I know is uMadiba and not about the elections,” she said.

But perhaps the musician was displaying yet another element of her gross ignorance, which sometime back saw her

declaring that her first visit to Zimbabwe was also her first time to be in Africa. But her musical ability is

    beyond question.

She effortlessly delivered a good show despite the death of her brother some two weeks ago.

The song “Incwad Encane”, which features Zimbabwe’s own George Munetsi had everyone on their feet.

Surprisingly, Zahara sang well the Shona part, better than most of the Zimbabweans who attended the show.

And she looked awesome in dress and the Afro hairstyle which worked so well for her.

However, Zahara, who is also the brand ambassador for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, almost raised the ire

of the audience when she said she was pleased to perform at the “free” show when, in fact, fans had paid up to US

    $20 for a ticket.

Other performing artistes who thrilled the crowd included Tanga wekwa Sando, who performed two songs one of which

was meant to raise environmental awareness.

Spotting a cap written “Boys Dze- Tonaz”, Tanga is happy to be associated with township love as well as music.

Although the fans had wanted his classic hit “Wake” Tanga chose to play “Buhera” .

Later, the fun continued with BaShupi, who doubled as an emcee.

BaShupi serenaded music lovers with a medley of songs including “Tunonaka”, “Mai Mwana Muri Chocolate” and “Godo”

which he jokingly performed in Chinese and English, proving his showmanship.

To most people BaShupi is not just a musician, but a performing artiste whose versatility endears him well to fans.

He recently promised fans to pull a Mitchell Jambo stunt through recording popular songs by other artistes.

The Green ambassador Derek Mpofu, who opened the show, made his presence felt when he performed songs that raise

    environmental awareness.

However, the good thing about his music is that it is enjoyable and danceable. He took control of the crowd from

start to finish. Pastor Stanley Gwanzura made a surprise appearance alongside Derek, much to the delight of the

crowd. The song “Chisikana Changu Zimbabwe” to which he likens the beauty of a woman to Zimbabwe’s flora and fauna,

was probably the highlight of his act.

The show, dubbed “Green Concert”, lived up to its billing and those that attended had fun. Hopefully, every dollar

    made would go towards charity.

Love me, love my belly – AK Songstress

Fast rising dancehall star, AK Songstress has struck a chord with music fans for two things, namely her energetic performances and her distinctive look.

Coming on the heels of criticisms by some fans on social media that the Funky Fresh hit-maker exposes too much of her belly, AK Songstress has responded by saying it is her brand identity and she intends to use it.

Speaking to Showbiz on Wednesday, she said, “I will continue to show my belly anytime, any day because that represents my brand and my identity, added to the fact that it makes me feel very sexy,” she said.

Asked what she does to keep her tummy trim and flat, AK Songstress said her impressively flat belly is all natural.

“My belly is naturally flat. I don’t go to the gym to get it like that or anything even remotely close to that. It’s been this trim since I was very young,” said the ‘dancehall empress’.

AK Songstress revealed that it’s her dream to settle down one day and have a family. When asked if she did not think people would tag her as a bad girl or as an irresponsible character because of her choice of clothing, which could probably deter her man, she replied: “Any guy that has a problem with me showing my belly and would not want to marry me because of that is not the right person for me.

“If you want to spend the rest of your life with me then you should accept me for whoever I am. I make music for a living so this is my identity and this is what I’m comfortable with, plus it brings my personality out.”

The dancehall firebrand however said there was no man in her life now as she was focused on her career.

AK Songstress has carved a reputation for herself as a very energetic performer and she told Showbiz that she had been a bundle of energy since she was very young.

“When I was young, my mother would always complain because I would be jumping all over the place and be kicking things around. That’s why I naturally gravitated towards dancehall music because it’s all about energy and enjoying what you do”.

On her experiences in the music industry, she said even though it had been good thus far, she had become aware and wary of lot of fake people in the industry.

“There are a lot of fake people in the music industry who only pretend to like you when they don’t. There are only a few real people in the industry as I see it,” she said.

Her advice to young and upcoming musicians was that they should take their time to study and know the real people from the fake ones instead of mingling with the wrong crowd because that might bring their career down.

AK Songstress describes herself as a go-getter and a humble and respectful person until she is disrespected.

She is passionate about the plight of women and said she hated men who disrespect women and take advantage of them.

She said that what she enjoyed most about her profession was the fact that people enjoy what she is putting out there.

    Jewel Ackah fights Obour

One of Ghana’s prominent highlife musicians, Jewel Ackah, has descended heavily on the current administration of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) saying its President, Bice Osei Kuffour and his executives lack enough competence to manage the affairs at MUSIGA.

The ace musician who sounded worried about the current state of the music industry told BEATWAVES in an interview last Friday in Accra that the elders of the Union have been sidelined by Obour and his cohorts who are rather inexperienced, heartless and do not have the welfare of the entire musicians at heart.

Jewel Ackah also hinted that Obour had failed to involve elders of the industry in their decision-making process, and stressed that “the root cause of the problems facing the Ghanaian musician today is bad leadership, that is what we are seeing at MUSIGA right now.”

According to him, Obour lacks better understanding of what he is doing and “as far as governing music is concerned, Obour has failed totally and has also failed to live up to expectation.”

Jewel Ackah, who described Obour as a wrong choice for MUSIGA presidency explained that Obour had created more harm to the Union than good “and most of the musicians are not happy with him.”

He stressed that there were several cracks including bad leadership in the Union, and it was high time the stakeholders came together to help find solutions to the numerous problems confronting the Union.

The ace musician continued that “the sad news is that musicians in Ghana today have no idea what they are due, several donors have been said to donate to musicians’ fund and nobody knows how much and how those monies have been disbursed.”

He also condemned the government for releasing the GH¢2 million (¢20 billion old currency) budget allocation to the creative arts industry to MUSIGA instead of the Music Council of Ghana (MCG).

He said the circumstances under which the government released the money to MUSIGA alone was quite mysterious, especially when the Minister of Finance, in reading the budget statement, had stated that the money was meant for the creative arts industry.

He told BEATWAVES that the stakeholders in the creative arts industry were unhappy because they have not been properly informed about how the GH¢2 million money was expended.

He said the money that was given to MUSIGA was tax payers’ money, which he thinks should be accounted for.

“I believe Obour should be made to acount for the money because we don’t know how the money was used.”

On the issue of Ghana Music Right Organization (GHAMRO), Jewel Ackah said he personally does not see anything wrong with them, “they are doing a very good job and we need to support them. Fighting will not solve our problems. We need to come together and work as a team to meet the challenges ahead.”
