  • The media favours other artistes above me – Jupitar

The media favours other artistes above me – Jupitar

Dancehall artiste Michael Okine, popularly referred to Jupiter in showbiz, is alleging the media favours some artistes above him.

Jupitar, who claims to have just returned from ‘Red Bull Culture Clash’ in South Africa expressed worry that not many media houses reported his exploits as the only Ghanaian featured on that bill.

The show according to him, also featured Nigeria’s Patoraking and Davido, South African rapper Nasty C, Jamaican Reggae/Dancehall act Beenie Man and many others across the globe.

“I believe media houses have their favourites. That one is too real, that’s the reality and that’s a fact,” he said.

He told Joy News’ MzGee that, “Over the years so many artistes have reigned, many have had their chances. They did so well in the industry and counting from then till now, any artiste that will be on top from Kojo Antwi’s time to Daddy Lumba’s, Obrafour, Sarkodie and now Shatta Wale, when there is an artiste reigning what majority of the media normally do is they concentrate more on the artiste.”

The ‘Enemies’ hitmaker has bagged another feat as the only Ghanaian nominee for the 2017 edition of the Urban Music Awards in the UK slated for the November 30.

The video for his single ‘Clown’ released in January is in the Best Video of the Year category.

Jupitar has also been nominated alongside Nigeria’s Wizkid, Mr. Eazi, Tekno, Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade and many others from other African countries in the Artist of the Year category.

He, however, would not mention which artiste has been favoured by the media over him.

“I don’t want to point fingers or put out some names which might be a problem. I know mostly people find diverse ways of understanding what we say. It might end up looking like you are envying somebody,” he said.

Jupitar is, however, relying on his fans and well-meaning Ghanaians to win the award.

Any performer who combine 3 different talents in one person would need a name that best reflect his natural ability. “XHILA” as a coined word was derived from the English word exhilaration which means to enthrill, cheer and gladden the hearts of people. As a proud ROYAL of KNUST he attaches “ROY” to his name to define his Royal affiliation.

Born Prince Debrah Danquah on 22nd September at Mexico, one of the inner cities of Ashaiman but grew up in Lebanon after he was three years old. Xhila Roy is a recording artiste with interests in Dancehall, Reggae, Lovers rock, Afro beats and uses “The Real McCoy” as his signature.

He realized his dream as a public speaker after graduating from Ashaiman Secondary School and pursued a course in broadcast Journalism. It was until he got admission into the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) that he started exhibiting his public speaking prowess as a presenter on Focus Fm 94.3 Mhz which is the official mouthpiece of KNUST. There he played an ambassadorial role in promoting dancehall as a presenter and as well was appointed as the Entertainment Chairman for Queen Elizabeth II Hall in 2011.

With his command over Jamaican language (Patwa) he successfully landed on-phone interviews with dancehall heavyweights from the Caribbean Island. In 2012, his brand became common among students in KNUST after interviewing DEMARCO who was by then beaming with pride on his worldwide hit song “I love my life”.

XHILA ROY’S commitment to entertainment landed him another appointment as the secretary of the SRC entertainment committee under the then Eben Bonsra’s administration in 2012. The staging of the “KNUST Galaxy Nyt” propelled him to lime light as he took center stage as the master of ceremony on the night to host an event that fetched close to ten thousand students.

With a degree in Bsc. Biotechnology, he combines DJ’ing and Presenting with music and have six singles with the first being “TRAMPLE”. Other singles from him are PARTY AGAIN, GOD AND MUSIC, FRENEMIES, MONEY, LIFE with a new song which is enjoying some air-play “LIKE SOLOMON”. He is the flagship of the XRoyREVOLUTION and uses the street chant “WARP” as his signature word.

Characterized by his lyrical onslaught, on-spot creativity and the ability to give listeners the reason to listen to his music, he implores the world to choose clear lyrics over noise as he intend to use Dancehall music to make the ghetto a better place.
